I liked the Likeness even more than Into the Woods. There was a neat cast of eccentric weirdos, plus Cassie is the narrator and I love Cassie.

Read Wolf Hall! Eventually! It's worth it :)

You should absolutely read Gotham Central. It's by two great comic writers, one of whom is my favorite comic writer of all (Greg Rucka) and features Renee Montoya, one of my favorite comic characters. I think you'd really enjoy it.

Would you believe the first time I ever felt listened to was being deposed by the FBI when I was about 22? I worked for a bank, the Feds had busted a fraud ring that had been running out of it, and they were deposing everybody to find out who knew about what. I knew about nothing, but they hung on my every word anyway. No wonder I ended up in the legal profession. But I'll bet I felt much the same way you did--though I bet you didn't think you needed a lawyer.

I'm gay, and married, and I don't eat at Chik-Fil-A. I didn't eat there before I got married, either, but it was (and still is) more of a question of preferring another brand of chicken than anything political. It's my belief that the whole gay-marriage issue will go away if and only if we come up with something that scares the Republicans more. My vote is for gay adoption. Make that the big issue and gay marriage will cease to be a concern, kind of like gays in the military stopped making headlines when gay marriage came along. Unless, of course, abortion steals the headlines. It does have an annoying way of doing exactly that.

Oh I am so tired of bigoted people who aren't bigots. ;) My point is definitely not "oh the poor people being called bigots they aren't just bigots they like to crochet and read hamlet and tell knock knock jokes and rescue puppies on the weekend so let's excuse all the bad thigns they do trallala"

My point is that they are people, capable of change and growth, and instead of throwing the bigot out with the bathwater, let's try to connect and communicate. Is it always possible? No,because sometimes self-protection supercedes anything else. Is it extremely difficult? Yes, absolutely.

We can hold people responsible for their words and actions without dismissing them utterly. We do it for our families and friends all the time. The problem with culture wars is that it reduces "sides" to huge, abstract groups. We feel safe saying "Christians think x" or "Gays are like y." But if you're talking face to face to a Christian or a gay man, it's different. You see them as individuals. You're probably not going to be so abrasive.

I wonder if you think I'm veering on tone argument here--and I'll be honest, I think I am. And I'm okay with that. People take the tone argument too far, I think. It becomes an excuse just to be a self-righteous jackass. Anger is an understandable emotion, one that I value greatly and think is important, not just in relating to society, but in constructing identity. However, when you prioritize your desire (desire--not need) to express anger over any chance at effecting meaningful change, you start to lose the high ground imo. Particularly in this controversy, I saw A LOT of people going "YEAH! I DONT SHOP AT CHIKFIL A I AM MORALLY SUPERIOR TO EVERYONE ELSE."

That's not expressing true anger, that's excitement over being able to show people just how enlightened and progressive you are. True anger has a place here, because the pain being caused should be felt, but this manufactured anger is irritating and destructive.
